Setting - The alarm system is normally programmed to have a full set when all the detection is active for when you are not in the house, and a part set so that downstairs can be active but the upper floors are not. If you have a bungalow it can be configured so that your bedroom and access to the bathroom is off but the other rooms are active in part set.
Coverage - When considering your protection for your home, it is normal to cover all ground floor doors and windows with movement detectors. These detectors have a 90 degree cover for up to 12m and should be positioned in the corner opposite to the main doors or windows.
Entry Route - The door(s) that you will use to enter and exit your home should have a magnetic contact fitted this means that by opening this door it is the only way into the property without activating the alarm, when you are leaving you enter your code and the alarm will only set when the door is closed.
Balconies and Flat Rooves - Upper floor windows / balcony doors to bedrooms that have easy access, say from a low flat roof can be protected with shock detectors, these can also be active in the part set mode.
Repeaters - The wireless technology works well and can cover outbuildings up to 30m away. However, if your property is extremely large and has thick walls repeaters may be necessary to ensure reliable operation.
External Sounder - The external warning sounder is fitted normally at the front where it is clearly visible and a decoy sounder that looks exactly the same at the rear.
Wiring - All of the equipment is wireless, but the main control panel and the repeater if required must be wired into the mains electricity supply. For Dialler and Monitored alarms the system must also be connected to your telephone line or your broadband hub.
Pets - Pet Immune Detectors can be used, however if you have kittens that climb curtains or a dog the size of a Labrador then they should be restricted to certain rooms when the alarm is set and shock and / or break glass detectors used for those rooms.
Fire Warning - Smoke/Heat detectors are usually fitted in the main escape routes, i.e. Hall and Landing, if specified for your kitchen they must be set to heat only.
